Do you remember where you were on New Year’s Eve 1999? I sure do! It inspired a fictional short story that I published a few years ago. The story still nagged at me, and through this process, I was able to explore it more deeply, create new characters and situations, and see a different, stronger version come to life. My protagonist deals with some harsh realities from the kitchen of a hotel ballroom 15 minutes to midnight. Given that I spent Y2K working in a hotel, this has been, to say the least, cathartic.

LA Times Cartoon re: V Tech Massacre

This cartoon by political cartoonist Ted Rall appeared in the LA Times on Friday. Too soon? I had a hard time finding it. I went to gocomics.com and paged through about 2 dozen with Virginia Tech as the cartoon's topic before I finally found it.

The Price of Paradise, a documentary about Santa Barbara's affordable housing predicament and its effects on critical workforce, will screen at the esteemed Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Friday evening, January 26 and Monday morning, January 29. As the writer, producer and director of this film, which I worked on for the better part of a year for the County of Santa Barbara, I became its most ardent supporter. I'm thrilled that the project's goal of creating community awareness and showing to a large local audience is being achieved.
